Welcome to Open Source Sports! Since the website I previously used to share sports analytics research is melting away in the fires of Mount Doom, I’ve decided to try out Substack. This will likely be a disaster - BUT I am hoping to take the idea from the podcast I’ve co-hosted with Kostas Pelechrinis and use this newsletter to highlight the latest research in sports analytics1.
What this effectively means, is that I’ll be reading papers published in academic journals and try to summarize them, highlight their contributions, and translate them for students and the general sports audience. I’ve learned over the years that amazing researchers are writing and presenting academic papers in sports analytics without the fanfare they deserve. This is probably because they are much smarter than me and have no interest in wasting their time with the perils of social media. So that’s where I come in!
My goal is to get the first newsletter out this month, and hopefully continue to do this on a monthly basis. I will also share smaller updates on my own work (because I’m an academic with a rather large ego...), any work by my amazing students, and other CMSAC related news such as our upcoming conference.

This will also be the new home for the podcast… assuming I didn’t break anything in the migration of it. And yes there will be new episodes eventually!
